January Schedule and Special Gift!

Happy New Year, league members!  I have a few schedule updates and something for everyone to be excited about!

  • First and foremost, I want to give a big thank you to everyone that made these first few months with the league a smashing success!  The participation and dedication has been nothing short of amazing.  Because of this, I wanted to reward our members while motivating new members to register their Pokemon Player ID online:
All league members that have registered their Pokemon Player ID with Pokemon.com (and have attended at least two league meetings) will receive this gift pin set.  The pins themselves can be used as status markers for the card game and include (in order) Poison, Burn, Sleep, Paralysis, and Confusion, as well as an extra pin with the Pokemon at the Mills logo.
Remember, this gift is only for members who have registered their Player ID with Pokemon.com.
  • If you are participating in the upcoming City Championship Tournament, the Century III Mall New Dimensions tournament is on Jan. 7, and the Clearview Mall New Dimensions tournament is on Jan. 8.  For more information on either of these tournaments, visit 330 Games here:
    http://home.earthlink.net/~ffmastershoe/pokemon/tournaments.html
  • If you're not sure how to participate in a tournament, did not receive a tournament info packet, or have any other questions, send me an e-mail at millspokemonleague[at]gmail[dot]com.
  • There is no league meeting on Jan. 8.
  • The first meeting for the Insect season will be Jan. 15.
Because there have been no league meetings for three consecutive weeks, all games in the Insect season will be worth double stamps.Alongside the Insect badge, the prize cards for this month are holographic Psychic Energy and Whirlipede from the Black & White set.
  • Though not directly related to Pokemon or the league, New Dimension Comics is having Free Dice Days on Jan 20 & 21.  Get a free dice for coming in and another for every $5 you spend those days.
Once again, thanks for a great start, and I look forward to seeing you guys at the tournament or back at the league!

Counterfeit Cards, Player IDs, and Dec. 18th Seminar

A few important announcements for today:

---

First, it has been brought to my attention by the New Dimensions staff that the Dollar Value store in the mall is selling boxes of counterfeit Pokemon cards.  I am currently researching what I am able to do about it, but in the meantime, I just wanted to remind players to always purchase their cards from reputable dealers in sealed packages.  Buying sealed boosters and sealed preconstructed deck boxes are the only way to ensure you aren't getting ripped off.

For more information on identifying counterfeits, Pokegym has a good article that gives an overview on how to identify certain flaws in counterfeits:
http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=64968
Otherwise, the New Dimensions staff and I would be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about counterfeit cards.

---

Second, I have an important note to Parents.

With the end of the Basic season, I have just submitted the list of participating members so that I could order next season's materials, and I noticed something alarming.  Only 8 of our 18 members who participated this season have registered their Play! Pokemon ID on the Pokemon website, specifically our younger members.

Remember! We rely on your registrations to order supplies!
The Pokemon Company sends us supplies based on how many registered players we have.

Our supply shipments are calculated in this way: The number of registered players x 1.5 rounded up to the nearest 10.  This means that the more unregistered players we accrue, the less likely I'll be able to cover their prizes.

I will bring my laptop to assist parents with registering their child's Play! Pokemon ID on the 18th.
At that time, I will need to take those registering to the area close to Panera's and Macy's as those are the only spots offering usable Wifi.

Thank you for your understanding.

---

Third, I wanted to remind everyone that I will be holding a brief seminar during our Dec. 18th league meeting to prepare players for the upcoming Pokemon City Championship Tournament on Jan. 7 & 8.
Because I know this will be the first structured tournament that many players will be participating in, I will be going over the special rules involved in a tournament setting, as well as deck building ideas and strategies.

If you want us to help you build a deck for the tournament, I highly recommend organizing your cards ASAP.  The better your cards are organized, the easier it will be to build a deck.  If you choose to bring your cards on Dec. 18th, we will have several League Leaders to help you put a deck together.

Otherwise, I know not everyone will be able to make it Dec. 18, so I will send an e-mail out later this week with all information from the seminar, including where and when the tournaments will be.

--

Remember, there are no league meetings Dec. 25, Jan. 1, or Jan. 8.
On the 8th, I will be in Butler for the aforementioned City Championship tournament.

---

Finally, I wanted to leave players with a few tantalizing tidbits about upcoming card sets:

- The next card set to be released will be "Black and White: Next Destinies" and will feature the return of both Pokemon EX cards and Pokemon species from Generations I through IV.  The new booster packs will feature art of Reshiram, Zekrom, Mewtwo, and Regigigas.  The new preconstructed decks will feature Reshiram and Zekrom.

- Upcoming Japanese promotional materials suggest that a new element will be added to the card game: Dragon-type Pokemon.  If true, this is the first new Pokemon type added to the card game in over a decade!  Because the U.S. is only two sets behind the current Japanese releases, I personally speculate that we will likely see these Dragon-type cards by the end of 2012.

Have a nice week, and if I don't see you on Sunday, have a great Holiday!

December Schedule

With December upon us, I feel that it's about time to list a few important days coming up soon.

First, some unfortunate news.  I only have ONE Trio badge left.  The Pokemon League International is still working to fill the high demand for Trio Season materials, and I may yet be able to get more supplies in the future, but unless/until that happens, I am restricted by what I can offer.  I DO have more than enough Basic Badges to cover demand, so there are no worries for this current season.

However, I do have some good news too!  League member Brandon W. has been promoted to League Leader status.  He too will be able to work with new players and sign scorecards.  I hope I speak for everyone when I say we greatly appreciate his dedication and willingness to help!

Dec. 11 - Last Day of the Basic Season. All games played after this day are worth double-stamps on your Basic Badge scorecard.

Dec. 18 - Off-season play meeting. Work to fill up any unfinished cards.  If I have enough time this day, I may have a Modified-Legal deck building "seminar" to prepare players for the upcoming Battle Road City tournament.  I will give more information on this sometime next week.

Dec. 25 - Christmas.  THERE WILL NOT BE A LEAGUE MEETING TODAY.

Jan. 1 - New Years.  THERE WILL NOT BE A LEAGUE MEETING TODAY.

Jan. 7 - Battle Road Tournament at New Dimension Comics in Century III Mall (Pittsburgh).
Jan. 8 - Battle Road Tournament at New Dimension Comics in Clearview Mall (Butler).

Later this month I will specifically send out an e-mail giving information about the Battle Road Tournaments.

Because of the way the Christmas and New Years holidays fall this year, IF I were to take off for the week to participate in Battle Road and help participating members, it would be three weeks in a row without a league meeting.  I have not yet determined whether or not I wish to do this.  I will try to consult my League Leaders on the matter, as well as New Dimensions, but I would also like input from you, our members.

In the mean time, have a good weekend, and I'll see you Sunday!
